What are patterns and how to use them

Patterns come in all shapes and sizes imaginable. From printed fabrics to natural materials, patterns add dimension and expression to any space. It can be scary to mix and match patterns, but the only way to master them is to know them inside out, and then use them. Learn the basics with our simple tips:

Mix them up

Using the same pattern in every room can make your space look boring and monotonous. To avoid getting bored with a pattern, you need to play around with it. We suggest combining different patterns to create movement, shape and definition in your home. For example, you can choose geometric shapes like curves, lines or grids to create a connecting thread in your living space.

Size matters

You cannot find an outlet for your creativity without considering size and proportion in your design. Taking different shapes and sizes into consideration will benefit your creativity by challenging your design idea. When choosing a large pattern, try to match it with something smaller. This way, your space will have a style in complete harmony.

Choose a color palette

Everything that has to do with design also has to do with color. Therefore, you will need to find a color scheme that suits you and your home. The color palette you choose will work as a common thread from which to start when choosing furniture or decorations. Try to create a coherent look with different shades of your favorite color and see the result: you will be surprised.

Creativity is your friend

Don’t be afraid to go overboard. Creativity is your absolute best friend when it comes to patterns—you might discover things you never knew you’d like if you hadn’t tried them. Patterns are a way to express yourself in style in your home. Are you into old-school, vintage style? Or are you more of an innovative, avant-garde type? If your choice is applied consistently to each space, you’ll have nothing to fear.
