How to furnish your balcony

Furnishing the balcony can seem like a difficult task if you don't have much room or time, but with our advice everything will get easier. The balcony represents an extension of the interior space and is made to offer comfort and relaxation during the summer.

First of all, make sure that the furniture for your balcony is weather resistant as well as aesthetically pleasing. Cheap furniture is usually short-lived and prone to deteriorate due to atmospheric phenomena.

Atmospheric Phenomena

Before you choose the furniture for your balcony, analyze the climate around you. Is it warm and sunny, moist or rainy? Finding the answer to these questions is critical for recognizing your balcony's weaknesses. For example, if it's too sunny you will need a sunshade, a tent or a pergola to protect your furniture from sunlight. In addition, wind or moisture can damage furniture: moisture is metal and wicker's enemy, whilst the wind damages light and fragile materials. For this reason, look after materials such as wood, which can easily end up chipped or decayed. You greatest ally is resin: a waterproof material, available in different shades and finishes, perfect for your balcony.

How much room do you have?

Examine the shape of the balcony you have at your disposal, before you furnish your balcony. Its structure, whether narrow or wide, can make a big difference in the choice of furniture. In fact, the shape of your balcony significantly affects the size of tables and seats, which must be proportionate to the surrounding area. Also, remember to leave enough space between each piece of furniture not to obstruct the passage.

Comfort is a must

For your balcony to be a great chill-out area, use soft, high-quality outdoor fabrics to decorate your seats. We recommend washable fabrics that are resistant to fading, wind and mold. Also, remember to store away the pillows in the cold months to prevent decay due to the weather. The use of soft and practical materials, attention to detail and the use of various complements will make your balcony comfortable and welcoming. The design you go for, however, must be in harmony with every piece of furniture chromatically. Therefore, cut down on your color palette to give your eyes a good rest.

Gear up for winter

If you want to be ready to face the arrival of winter, it is about time you found a place to store your balcony furniture to protect it from the weather. Since even a sunshade may not be enough, another option is to buy foldable furniture and then cover it with a tarp at the end of the season. If you don't have that much space, buy an openable seat where to store cushions, fabrics or similar accessories.

Lighting

For your balcony to look interesting, take care of the lighting. A dark or badly lit balcony can seem boring and grim, thus losing all its potential. Remember you have great, casual alternatives within hand's reach, such as light garlands or floor lamps, but do not exceed 40-60 lux for outdoor lighting. In so doing, you will avoid blinding anyone who might stand at your balcony. Additionally, you won't have to buy too many accessories to light it properly and you'll have found the most suitable option for you.
